I'll give it a try, but part of my frustration is that the behavior changed after upgrading to Fedora 32, my .vimrc did not change, so at a minimum my settings are likely being interpreted differently.

is something like this https://github.com/vim/vim/issues/989 ? , i.e a problem in a specific syntax highlight , I got this one on python, I added to my .vimrc

let g:python_recommended_style=0
