I think FESCo would agree to temporarily continue building it with python2, given that upstream has already worked on supporting building with python3 eventually. At least, I would approve such an exception request (and other, similar requests for firefox, chromium, etc. have already been approved). But, if you think a current git snapshot would be an appropriate target for packaging, that solves the problem as well (I don't know how stable their development branch is).
