There is many ways to do it.

I can provide links to, at least, half dozen of other methods how to create rpm package. My favorite one is "how to create nosrc.rpm" packages [1].

Even in the Fedora, the mentioned methods are not the only ones.
All those tutorial are meant to be simple. To be easy to understand. If you feel that some methods are complicated, then feel free to pick up the easier method.
