It leads to a poorer experience managing those packages when they
aren't multiversioned. That's why OpenMandriva switched to
multiversioned packages for Lx4.

The experience managing kernel packages in Debian, Mageia, and other
distributions that do it the way you propose make things very
difficult and annoying.

openSUSE's multiversion packages are slightly more complex since they
are also multi-flavor (without multiple flavors) and are technically
invalid EVR-wise...

It might be nicer if they dropped the flavor bits...
