Are you compiling with -D_GLIBCXX_ASSERTIONS when you try it locally?

I think you will need enabled that to trigger that, and it's in the
default rpm build flags.

Surprised you don't see it in mock though, at least if you're doing
an rpm build in mock rather than just using a mock shell to do a manual
build.
