As much as i hate saying it, probably dropping Sendmail is not a good
move. After all, it still is the standard MTA in many places.
The current situation (Sendmail as default, another MTA as an
alternative, plus an easy way to switch between them) is best at the
moment. If Sendmail's "market share" declines drastically, then
switching the default should be easy.
