What's really needed is something tiny, optimized for a machine that rarely sends mail, has a highly-available smarthost, and never receives mail from the network: Starts from xinetd on port 25 (localhost only). Will queue if smarthost is unavailable. Runs from cron to flush queue. Submission interface is not setuid; it talks SMTP to smarthost or localhost. Nothing else. Exim has a mode which is close, but it rejects the message if it can't talk to the smarthost. Someone who really wants to run a mail server can install one. - J<
