The problem was that the build attributes section reference kept the
code around. A hidden symbol, even if it works otherwise, will bring
back that problem at least.
Oh, perhaps a hidden+weak symbol will work. But it still needs to be
globally unique before the final link, so part of the naming problem
remains.
