I'm mostly in favor of this, but as the perpetrator of the current
hardening flag hack in r-r-c, I really do wish there was a better way
to set these defaults than -specs=blah. The current implementation is
fragile and leaks out to the rest of the OS in weird ways.

I'm aware that fixing this "sanely" would probably require fixing the
toolchain to (allow us to) declare more intent about the destination of
an ET_REL object when it's being built; fine, let's do that.

Is anyone looking at this change from that perspective?
