According to "freedesktop.org Bug 61998 - Fails to read status from
WD raptors"[2] the patch is in Debian/Ubuntu. Lennart Poettering did
the last upstream[3] commit 7 years ago, but seems to be busy now.
Leonard started libatasmart to modernize SMART access for desktop
systems, etc, but it seems that it is languishing now. I have an open
issue for libatasmart misreading the data from FLASH drives:

In the meantime, smartmontools was modified to use a dynamic parameter
mapping for new drives; I am not sure if this is a reasonable feature
for libatasmart, and could it be shared between them, but maybe we
should discuss the future directions.
