I think at some point it was a link to, like, /var/log/wtmp or
something like that. I could be dreaming it, I always have brain cramps
when it comes to that file.

And yes, now you mention it, of course it's obvious that the file will
be bigger when large UIDs are in play, but I was missing that - it
explains some things that didn't add up...
