Wouldn't have been better to go with the following? something.conf.d/something.conf [base conf file, handled by something.rpm] something.conf.d/*.conf [additional files, handled by other rpms or manually] In this way the rule would have been "if you do not see something.conf, it is actually inside something.conf.d", and expansion would be very straightforward.
