FWIW when I bundle, I use git submodules.

A major benefit of this is that it makes it a lot harder to patch
the upstream "accidentally" - you have to make an explicit
fork if you do end up doing that.

However, Fedora mainline rel-eng currently uses tarballs, and
has no idea about git.
