Right proxy settings detection method

Hi,

I'm not sure this is the best place to ask...
Does anyone have some hints/docs about the best way to get web proxy
settings from apps written with QT, it might be the same problem with
others APIs?
My point is that, for example on Fedora, you can easily run any
application on any desktop and the way you get proxy settings may be
different.
Do I need to detect the current running desktop, or is there any unified
way to get proxy setting(other than http_proxy var).
Gnome doesn't set http_proxy variable, so is gsettings the only way to
get gnome proxy settings?

Best regards,
Alexis.
