The right way to handle this is the way that every other package
handles it.  Detect the no-longer-compatible option and tell the user
"that option is no longer available".  That way, the only users who
are ever inconvenienced are the few that are using the obsolete
option.

The wrong way to solve this is to inconvenience *every* user for the
sake of the few who need it.
