Actually the first time I stepped onto this (Notes installation, in fact; which we could never get to work) it reminded me a lot of the Windows SysWOW64 mess.
For those that do not know:
32 bit: C:\WINDOWS\system32
64 bit: C:\WINDOWS\system32
64 bit: C:\WINDOWS\system32
32 on 64 bit: C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64 + the 32 bit software sees that folder as C:\WINDOWS\system32.
Argh.
