Of course you can. In fact we've done this more than once in Fedora.
There was a gtk+3 package parallel installable with with 'gtk+' (which
was a 2.x version) for a while; now 'gtk+' is 3.x. It's not a problem at
all from a packaging perspective.
Bad example there. In fact the gtk packages in Fedora are still:
gtk+: 1.x
gtk2: 2.x
gtk3: 3.x
Always have been, never changed. All parallel installable, all still in
Fedora.
