I'm just beginning to monitor the developer lists, and while not a
newcomer, I am not really up to speed yet on all developments.  If I am
following this thread correctly, journald seems to be currently a binary
format.  I don't know much, but I do know that from experience binary
files require additional support.  i.e. more documentation,
interpreters, format control, etc.  

Also one of the things we (linux folk) decry about most proprietary
packages is in fact the arbitrary encoding of information in proprietary
formats.  Add in the fact that storage is relatively cheap today, and it
would seem that having all logs in text to simplify reading, access,
support and legacy storage would be most desirable.  Additionally text
logs compress nicely for archival storage.

I do hope you consider these points in the process.
