We've seen this a few times without root cause.

There are a couple.  Do you happen to have any out-of-memory or
segfault traces in dmesg or /var/log/messages for depmod,
new-kernel-pkg, or dracut?



There is nothing in /var/log/messages during the yum install.

There was a new dracut, but running the dracut line by hand and installing the grub2 initrd line by hand works fine. I didn't try the dracut line with the appropriate theme though (so my initramfs image is smaller than usual)
