I think there should be no problems at all... I started using IPv6 at
2.5.70+ kernels, but previously, I haven't used it at all. I can't think
of any reason that disabling IPv6 could break something. In fact, when I
take my laptop away to IPv4-only networks, I usually remove the
link-local IPv6 address from eth0.
