Some people still burn CDs as they are a bit cheaper. Some file systems in
popular use, have file sizes limited to 4 GiB (which is less than fits on
a DVD).

There are still breakpoints in sizes and these may be more important than
being able to run natively in both i686 and x86_64 modes with the same
media.
