PulseAudio emulates the ESounD protocol and for some legacy applications (not even all proprietary), it's the best or even the only way to get them to talk to PulseAudio. We also don't ship the esd daemon itself, only the libraries and protocol emulation in PulseAudio. That's quite different from the situation with NAS, where the only implementation is NAS itself, which is incompatible with PulseAudio and which is supported by few applications.
