That's a nautilus behavior, controlled by the gconf keys: /apps/nautilus/preferences/media_automount /apps/nautilus/preferences/media_automount_open Either one is enough to cause automounting. Both are enabled by default, and only the second can be disabled through the UI, so it's unlikely that a beginning user would have automounting disabled unless the sysadmin did it for him/her. Assuming nautilus automounting is enabled, would that be enough for PackageKit to work properly or is there some other issue?
