packaging installed documentation

Are there any guidelines on how to deal with "extra" documentation
installed by a package? I'm thinking specifically of newer versions of
gtkmm which install documentation in /usr/share/doc/gtkmm-$major.$minor
manually. Is it better form to just leave it where it is and use an
absolute %doc reference or move it back to the source tree and use a
relative reference so RPM puts it in
/usr/share/doc/%{name}-%{version}-%{release} ?
