fixed things in the kernel to make it work properly on OldWorld Macs and
it _has_ been known to work fine.
It _ought_ to work if you sort out the bootloader.

If Mac OS isn't bootable, then you need to use quik ( http://penguinppc.org/bootloaders/quik/ ) instead of BootX.
