Device Setup Packages

Hi:

Wouldn't it be nice to somehow encapsulate all of the Device Setup
HOWTOs on the Internet into some repository of packages that configures
the machine for its particular installed devices? The first area of
need would be for laptops using a common package format that brought in
the necessary drivers and edited /etc/modprobe.conf for the user.

In light of this, it would also be nice if there was a /etc/modprobe.d
directory so that these types of packages can add/remove configurations
for network, usb, irda, thinkpad drivers, sound, ppp, etc. etc.

Maybe the user could run a kudzu-like command that would then make
package recommendations?

It would be a big effort, but I think a lot of people would benefit from
this stupification step. What do you think?

take care,
