It's still extra typing though. Also, any ideas on having the x86_64
kernel auto-updated (while keeping userpsace i586)?

you could try adding
excludepkgs=kernel*
Maybe create a 64bit repo
with includepkgs=kernel(64)
Open to correction on this.
