Nothing can be run since that is requires a file to be opened. Ctrl+Alt+Bksp is the only way I've found that "fixes" the problem without a reboot (other than not using DE, which is...annoying). Yes there is a bug open against it: <https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=486695>.
