That's true, on the other side it is the last release providing the F77
compiler.  While gfortran's F77 support got better, I don't think it can
serve as a 100% replacement yet.

However, nothing in Fedora appears to require it to biuld.


Not true. memtest86+ still needs it to build a working binary. Known upstream issue.
