Well, strictly speaking you can press any key (I think even Ctrl will do), but advantage of 'a' is that it gets you straight to kernel command line ('a' command in grub).

You mean it isn't supposed to be F8? :-) Wonder where I got that idea from, then.

You don't have to "press repeatedly" either, just start holding something as the BIOS is finishing with POST.
