Not necessarily. Usually, if you're the client-end of an authentication
session (i.e. the one asking to be authenticated) you'll need the plain text
password. The server-end _may_ need the plain text password, depending on the
exact authentication scheme.

I'd expect a rather client-biased distribution of passwords in a users home
directory.
