Just double-click a folder with the middle mouse button.

The browser already clutters its window with a lot toolbars, buttons and
gadgets. With tabs it clutters the window even more.

The browser view feels so... Windows XP.

But seriously, who cares? If you dislike the folder/browser view, just
configure it the way you like it. How often do you need to reconfigure
your Gnome? My Gnome settings are a couple of years old now.
