This doesn't explain how to give metacity the boot. xmonad doesn't honor --replace or most other window manager command line options, and metacity is no longer listed in the sessions capplet. Secondly, i found that when gnome tries to manage xmonad, it loads several instances and lets them fight with other until they crash in a pile of suckage.
