Uh no, if you want a downtime as small as possible, you run "yum upgrade" on the running system with X11 and all and hope for the best. :-) If everything works, the downtime will be only a reboot. But at least KDE won't like it very much if you upgrade it while it is running, especially not if that's an F8 to F9/F10 (KDE 3 to 4) upgrade. ;-) So the system might not be fully usable until the upgrade is complete. A safer way is to yum --download-only upgrade in runlevel 5, then swich to runlevel 3 and yum -C upgrade from there, but that does imply some downtime as far as graphical applications are concerned (of course if all you ever do is browse the web using Lynx you won't notice ;-) ).
