I don't think there is any need to do that... lets follow the
procedure. 

However, if any of those packages are closed, I would be happy to open
them up to someone who can do the needed updates now. No harm in taking
care of the security issues, IMHO. Then, if John is still away, we can
reassign ownership per the procedure.
