No, it shouldn't be, because that burns memory on integrated graphics machines like Intel, and because it destroys your ability to do 3d on older cards, and and and. We do have a heuristic to pick a plausible virtual size based on how much video memory you have. It's not perfect, nor can it ever be. We're hoping for F11 to have it fixed so the screen is dynamically resizable. - ajax
