CMake is the only alternative I'd recommend, *but* it's still not done
right.  A good alternative would be a purely declarative language
which integrates well with other declarative systems of dependencies
(eg. RPM's BuildRequires).  I've not seen anything like that which is,
at the same time, at the level of completeness of autotools or cmake.
