Autotools is by far the easiest way to build successfully on all platforms, and to cross-compile code. I invite you to try cross-compiling (for example) gtk2 versus boost, and you will see that writing your own build system, or using a lesser build system that doesn't have all the experience behind it of autotools (or cmake), is an idiotic idea.
