After testing out a lot of packages (easily installed via yum or whatever) the poor user may have an awful lot of empty users/groups clogging up his system though. I don't think it's a cut and dried problem. It at least provides a workaround for my immediate problem in that I can just reinstall the package until it stops whining about missing users/groups. --erik
