Are there any particular reasons for not using udev by default these days? It seems limiting the entries in /dev to existing devices is a good idea (particularly given the number of devices currently listed...)
The only thing missing (IIRC) is autoloading of modules upon device entry access, but that seems to be the job of hotplug anyway...

According to Bill Nottingham, it is too late to do it for FC2, but it seems like there are plans to do it at some point in the future.
