I believe this is a bug, try it for yourselves:
open package-kit (Software)
try searching for a thing on the top-left searchbar
now remove the search from the searchbar (delete it)
click on the GNOME category
it will tell you that there is no results, which is odd because
there are still some results in other categories... this may be caused
because package-kit is searching for literally nothing, as in the query
is "".
