We had recently the GIMP package maintainer commenting on the Desktop list[1], it looks like we will get it packaged only after the final release, which is currently targeted around December. Maybe an un-official build tracking the development would help a lot of people getting their GIMP fix, there are changes which got a lot of people excited (not only the GUI, but also more gegl integration).
