Hi everybody,
Let's get voting, I've set up a vote to expire this Saturday, Jan 9 so
we can get started brainstorming on visual concepts next week.
An email invitation to vote is going out right now to your email address
listed in the Fedora Account System (accounts.fedoraproject.org) for all
Fedora Design Team group members. Let me know if you have any issues
accessing the survey. I'm using LimeSurvey which is a FLOSS survey
system to run it.
Cheers,
~m

Hi everyone,
We missed the boat on getting the F33 and F34 wallpaper out at the
same time. We have the F34 wallpaper underway but I'd like to try to
get F34 and F35 out at the same time so we can finally get ahead a
release.
As a refresher, each release we increment a letter of the alphabet and
look to highlight a scientist, inventor, or engineer whose name begins
with that letter and use their work as inspiration for the visual
concept of the wallpaper.
For example, F29's inspiration was Alexander Graham Bell ("B") and we
embedded the concept of a vocal sound wave into the visuals of a
forest reflecting in water.
For F35, the letter is J. The first part of this process is as a team
we vote on which of a few J figures we find most inspirational / the
best possibility for cool visuals for the F35 wallpaper. I propose the
list below. Should we get voting?

1. Irene Joliot-Curie -
Marie Curie's daughter, she was a Nobel-prize winning scientist who
was the first to transmute stable atoms into radioactive atoms.
Visual concepts around this theme could deal with transformation /
change / conversion, and energy/power.
--
2. Edward Jenner -
Credited with the discovered of smallpox vaccination - he noticed
milkmaids that had contracted cowpox from working with cows were
immune to smallpox and developed and tested a vaccine.
This concept is clearly timely with the ongoing pandemic. We could key
off of that, one of the concepts around defeating an infectious
disease is each individual caring about the needs of the whole
community and being considerate, and understanding we're all one - so
that's one potential concept that could be visualized in some form.

3. Mae Carol Jemison -
A medical doctor and sceintist who became a NASA astronaut studying
the effects of weightlessness and motion sickness on human health. She
also appeared on an episode of Star Trek and is the only real
astronaut to ever do so.
Jemison was a doctor (also very timely to feature a doctor with the
pandemic) as well as an astronaut and a teacher/mentor. We've done a
lot of space themes and I'd suggest aiming away from a generic space
theme and maybe thinking about specifically the human body in space
since that was her research topic for NASA.

4. Whitcomb Judson -
A mechanical engineer from the mid 19th century with many
railway/streetcar patents who also happened to have invented the zipper.
There's a lot of neat abstract visuals we could come up with I think
around the mechanism of a zipper (which he called a "clasp-locker
fastener"). The way the components weave together, and the general
concept of connecting things could be neat visuals.

5. Reynold B. Johnson -
A high school science teacher who became an engineer at IBM and
invented the first hard drive in 1956. In his retirement he invented
technology to enable Fisher Price toys to speak.
I'm not too sure about visuals for this one but the invention of the
hard drive seems pretty significant and relevant to Fedora so I
figured I'd throw it in :)
Cheers,
