Re: Questions about Outreachy Fedora Design Project

Hi Marie,
thank you for your answers, I will check all the links you have provided.
The main reason I ask all these questions is that during the application period I also want to improve my skills. Even though I might be not chosen, I will still have some benefit from the participation. That is why I don't try to accomplish as many tasks as possible - it doesn't add value to my future work.
What I am trying to achieve is to identify future directions I might work on, identify my weak spots as an open-source designer, eliminate those weak spots during the work on my application tasks, and, finally, to share the knowledge and experience among other designers.
Currently, I have been suggested to try some additional tutorials on youtube:
https://old.reddit.com/r/Inkscape/comments/fizv3i/can_someone_advise_typography_and_infographics/
For now, I am working through them and trying to acquire some more general design knowledge with Inkscape. The next step for me will be to apply this knowledge on another task.

Hi Kate, answers inline below :)

Meanwhile, though I appreciate your forethought, I think it best to focus on the application period and worry about the projects for the internship later.

Dear Fedora design team,

since I want to participate in Outreachy (together with mentors we worked on this task https://pagure.io/fedora-badges/issue/716), I looked through the project tasks (https://www.outreachy.org/outreachy-may-2020-internship-round/communities/fedora/#create-and-improve-designs-for-the-fedora-projects). I have several questions:

1. There is a task where Budget report templates should be made. I found only this document:

https://duraspace.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Fedora-Annual-Report.pdf

Could you provide me with links to the existing templates and assets?

There is nothing in existence. The link with the document looks to have no ties to The Fedora Project. The previous version of reporting was never fully operational, and had to be done manually https://budget.fedoraproject.org/budget/docs/index.html There is preparation that needs to be done before this project is ready for designing.

2. “Infographics for participating teams within Fedora highlighting accomplishments”.

Are there any examples from from previous years? Is it possible to see the guidelines for making Fedora infographics?

There are potential examples, but I would like to see a new, modern, and hopefully easily updated versions that any team can use. This also needs research/prep before this is ready.

3. “Handouts for contributor recruitment initiative”, “Various assets for Flock 2020”, “Fedora Zine”.

Where can I learn more about the work done during previous years? Should I look for the relevant projects here https://pagure.io/browse/projects ?

The handouts project is a new thing, nothing created yet. Look in the design & badges pagure repos for "flock". Fedora zine is entirely new as well.

4. What software should be used for creating typography? Is it also Inkscape and GIMP? Could you recommend some tutorials on the topic? Maybe also specific Fedora guidelines?

Most of the work done for the internship will be done in Inkscape.

The Fedora Community Blog is a good place to look. This is more
event-focused and not data-focused, but it might give a better idea of
what events and activities the Fedora community participates in:

For the Flock conference specifically, here is some blog post content
about Flock:

    https://communityblog.fedoraproject.org/tag/flock/

There are design-related assets floating around in the pagure.io/design
issues, but I don't have any links on-hand. Someone else might be able
to better guide on where to look.
