The sum of colors in a logo has nothing to do with the size, I using 6 colors in the favicon of my personal page and u still can see what it is. Its more that u need a clear visible and memorable shape. There is a nice video, explaining the important things and how to create a logo. And the best we is it, to do it really only black and white.
