Yes, some people like lightning effects and funny gimmicks.
But I think it's more important to look professional and clean if we want to get to a bigger market - specially in the enterprise-section.
If Linux/GNOME/Fedora was all about funny gimmicks I wouldn't use it, because it's hard to take serious.
So, f.ex. your cursor idea would make me reconsider my distro of choice - not because it's hard to change, but because we will look like a distro which is all about funny-looking stuff.

Hi Guys,
Do you really think that the professional developers of Ubuntu and Microsoft for example have really the personal preferences they propose on the market.
It's all about the users and the striving to get as much of the market share as possible.
The underestimation of the competition and the users has never been be 'a good idea'.
Why don't you make a feasibility study to see that most of the users don't like to look professional - they are fond of 'lighting effects' and 'cool things'.
Yet there is a large share of people who want to look professional.
Maybe an option should be made to customise the desktop according to the personal preferences, thus the 'philosophy dispute' about the design image could be ended.
Have a nice day,
Regards
