FDA Recognizes DUNS Number as Acceptable for Importer Identification

The FDA took a step towards ensuring the accuracy of its inventory of importers responsible for meeting the requirements of the Foreign Supplier Verification Programs (FSVP) rule. The FDA issued guidance formally recognizing the Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS) number as an acceptable unique facility identifier for FSVP. The identification of importers will help the FDA effectively implement, monitor compliance with, and enforce the FSVP requirements, which are designed to help ensure that imported foods meet U.S. safety standards.

Have you ever wondered ....

How food additives are approved for animal food?

Food additives used in animal food are usually characterized based on their composition and intended use. An animal food additive is generally intended to supply nutrients, add aroma/flavor, aid stability, or alter a food’s characteristics.

A manufacturer or other sponsor may petition the FDA for approval of a new animal food additive or they may petition for a new use of an already approved animal food additive. To demonstrate that the additive is safe for the proposed use in an animal food, the sponsor submits a food additive petition. Want to know more?
