Hearing on Partnerships to Enhance the Safety of Imported Food - On
February 14-15, 2017, FDA will host a public hearing on partnerships that
enhance the safety of imported foods at the Center for Food Safety and Applied
Nutrition, in College Park, Maryland. At the hearing we will provide an update
on our food safety capacity building efforts, as well as additional updates and
information on the approach we will use to help ensure the safety of imported
foods.

What
is GRAS?
"GRAS" is an acronym for the phrase
Generally Recognized As Safe. Any substance that is intentionally added to food
is a food additive, that is subject to premarket review and approval by FDA,
unless the substance is generally recognized, among qualified experts, as
having been adequately shown to be safe under the conditions of its intended
use, or unless the use of the substance is otherwise excluded from the
