Message from the Director

It’s National Women’s Health Week (NWHW). Throughout the week, we are highlighting research and educational projects that help women make informed health choices at every stage of life from pregnancy and caregiving through menopause and healthy aging. Use the digital and print resources in this update and the resources we will be sending out via social media that you can use in your community outreach and clinical services.

After NWHW ends, continue to look to FDA for resources. I encourage you to join us in celebrating Clinical Trials Day on May 20th. Use our resources and research to connect with women from diverse backgrounds, ages and ethnicities on the importance of participating in clinical research. Let us continue the progress made in the inclusion of women in clinical trials by spreading the word to our networks.

Marsha Henderson, Assistant Commissioner for Women’s Health

CDER’s Deputy Center Director for Clinical Science Dr. Robert Temple will speak on Demographic Subset Differences. There will also be a presentation from the private sector regarding raising awareness of sex differences with industry leadership and evaluating sex differences in drug safety and efficacy post-approval.

FDA Authority Extended to All Tobacco Products

a2

FDA finalized a rule extending its authority to all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, cigars, hookah tobacco and pipe tobacco, among others. This historic rule helps implement the bipartisan Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act of 2009 and allows the FDA to improve public health and protect future generations from the dangers of tobacco use through a variety of steps, including restricting the sale of these tobacco products to minors nationwide.
