Message from the Director

All women are not the same. While this statement seems straightforward, we don't always take the time to recognize how this diversity impacts the health experiences of women. April is Minority Health Month, and we are taking time to focus on a range of health issues affecting diverse women. In this update, we highlight an upcoming workshop that will address women and diversity in clinical research. I encourage you to join us at the meeting and to also utilize some of the other featured resources for women from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

NIH’s Office of Research on Women’s Health, along with FDA’s Office of Women’s Health, is sponsoring an interactive panel discussion during National Women’s Health Week entitled Meet the Faces of Clinical Research: Beyond Inclusion. The panel will raise awareness about the importance of women and diversity in clinical research, what it is like to be involved in a study, and ethical issues and protections surrounding participation.

The panel will be held on May 14, 2015 from 10-12 a.m. at the NIH Lipsett Amphitheater in Bethesda, MD.

Mammography Safety Notifications

Under the Mammography Quality Standards Act, the FDA requires that all mammography facilities meet certain quality standards to perform mammography. When a facility fails to meet these standards, the FDA requires the facility to notify affected patients and their referring health care providers about possible problems with the quality of their mammograms and that patients should consider having their mammogram re-evaluated at another certified facility. In addition, the FDA posts a mammography safety notification online.
